DanceOntario Dance Weekend
Ballet Espressivo presents two new works by choreographer/ artistic director Donna Greenberg.
First, Ravished Soul: A young man seeks flight and release. Dancer: Eugene Dokoukine. Music: Nigel Simmons. This work will be performed at Youth American Grand Prix International Ballet Competition in February.
Second: The Wanderer: Excerpts. This tragic tale of love was inspired by Keats: La Belle Dame Sans Merci and the Romantic tradition of the Wanderer theme in art and music.
A young man falls in love with a Fairy Maiden. They are blissfully in love until the Fates/Witches intervene and separate them forever. He is doomed never to see her again, although she, being enchanted, can see him but can never have him in the flesh again. The woeful man was accursed to wander evermore through a frozen world of besetting Icemaidens, fair in form but foul in heart.
Dancers : Wanderer: Anton Pasquarella, Fairy Maiden: Järvi Raudsepp, Earth Sprite: Lindsay Sutton. The Wanderer film excerpt is performed by Icemaidens: Jessica Campbell, Gina Velasco Carballido, Lindsay Sutton, Wanderer: Anton Pasquarella. Cinematographer: Hal Swann. Director: Donna Greenberg. Music: Schubert and Schumann.
The Wanderer film will be completed and released mid:2009. Our three latest films can be viewed in the lobby.

I Can’t Go On
A dance film by Donna Greenberg,
Artistic Director of Ballet Espressivo
at Eros, Thanatos & the Avant-Garde ~ The Cabaret Series at the Rivoli!
Background: In 1939, hundreds of thousands of Polish Jews were rounded up and put into a segregated area that became known as the Warsaw Ghetto. From April 19 to May 16, 1943, leader Mordecai Anielewicz led his guerrilla warriors, the Jewish Fighting Organization in a valiant uprising and fought back against Nazi brutality at the cost of many lives and in the face of impossible odds. Uprising, the ballet by choreographer, Donna Greenberg, is inspired by this darkly heroic story.
I Can’t Go On, an excerpt from Uprising, evokes the terror experienced by Anielewicz, and one of his sister fighters as they are chased by their enemies in their search for refuge. In this poignant and heart-wrenching pas de deux, Anielewicz helps the exhausted and demoralized girl to find the courage and strength needed to go on. Performed with great eloquence and beauty, Ballet Espressivo dancers, Anton Pasquarella and Kalie Hunter, portray the nobility of these fighters’ struggle.
Music: Devil’s Candy Shop by Nigel Simmons. Cello Concerto, Op. 85, E minor by Edward Elgar Performed by Vancouver Chamber Orchestra, Eri Klas, conductor and Steven Isslerlis, violoncello. Recorded licensed by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
